Two million UK motorists risk expired driving licences
Martin Lewis has warned that about two million UK drivers may be at risk of having expired driving licences. The Money Saving Expert highlighted that many motorists might not realize their photocard licences need to be renewed every ten years. Driving with an expired licence is illegal and can lead to serious penalties, including fines. Lewis encouraged all drivers to check Section 4B of their licences to see if they have expired. He noted that expired licences could put two million people at risk of breaking the law. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) emphasizes that licence renewal is important for law enforcement. An updated photocard helps ensure that the photo used is current and helps prevent fraud. This means that police can accurately identify drivers and it reduces the chance of impersonation. Getting a new photocard also includes enhanced security features against fraud. Renewing a licence can make renting a car easier as well. Drivers who do not renew their licences risk fines of up to £1,000, which can be a significant burden for those facing financial challenges. Motorists can renew their licences online in just a few minutes through the GOV.UK website. Once submitted, a new licence typically arrives within three weeks. For those without internet access, applications can also be made by mail or at local Post Office branches that provide DVLA services.
