Typhoon brings heavy rain and evacuations as it approaches Taiwan
A typhoon is moving toward Taiwan, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. About 4,000 people have evacuated from low-lying and mountainous areas. The storm is expected to make landfall early Thursday on the west coast, which is unusual for typhoons. In the past four days, Taitung County has received 93 centimeters of rain, while Kaohsiung has seen 29 centimeters. Schools and government offices are closed, and all domestic flights have been canceled. Authorities have warned residents to stay away from flood-prone areas. Nearly 40,000 troops are ready to assist with rescue efforts. The typhoon has already caused four deaths and displaced over 5,000 people in previous areas it affected.
