Tyreek Coleman named 2024-25 Basketball Player of Year

Tyreek Coleman, a senior point guard at Waubonsie Valley High School, has been named the 2024-25 Boys Basketball Player of the Year for the Aurora, Elgin, and Naperville area. Coleman, who has committed to play for Illinois State University, led his team to a record-breaking 31 wins this season. Coleman credits his father, Todd, an Aurora police officer, for shaping him both on and off the court. He described his dad as his main role model. Coleman said their strong relationship has been essential to his growth as a player and a leader. This season, he averaged 20.3 points, along with strong statistics in rebounds and assists, helping the Warriors achieve a remarkable 58-6 record over the past two seasons. Waubonsie Valley’s head coach, Andrew Schweitzer, praised Coleman, calling him the best player in the state. He highlighted Coleman’s dedication to teamwork and his willingness to do the "little things" that make a great player. Coleman is known for encouraging his teammates, including younger players like sophomore Kris Mporokoso, who appreciates Coleman's support and leadership. Opposing coaches also recognize Coleman's talents. Gene Heidkamp, a coach for Benet, spoke highly of Coleman's skills and heart. Coleman expressed pride in leaving the basketball program in a better place than when he started and cherishes the memories made with his teammates. Coleman's family background includes shared custody between his father and mother, who lives in Kentucky. He moved in with his father during high school. Coleman shared how his dad, despite not being a basketball expert, learned the game to help him improve. Looking ahead, Coleman is focused on his college plans while considering his father's career in law enforcement with admiration.
