UAE doctors warn about dangers of anorexia nervosa
In Dubai, doctors are urging parents to be vigilant after the tragic death of a teenage girl in Kerala, India, from complications related to extreme water fasting. This case highlights the risks of anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder that involves severe food restriction and an intense fear of gaining weight. The girl had been practicing water fasting for months, reportedly learned from an online source, and was hiding food from her parents. Experts in the UAE are raising awareness about the disorder, noting that while cases are rare, they still occur. Dr. Fiji Antony, a clinical dietitian, stressed the importance of recognizing the signs of eating disorders early. She pointed out that these issues often go unreported, partly due to stigma and a lack of awareness. Dr. Shahid Gauhar, a pediatrician, commented on the dangers of extreme eating behaviors, explaining that a human cannot survive long on water alone. He noted that while some may survive for a few weeks only on water, it varies by individual health and body composition. Doctors also warned that prolonged fasting can lead to serious health issues, including malnutrition and organ damage. Dr. Singh emphasized that anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate among mental health disorders. Effective treatment requires a multi-faceted approach, including medical and psychological care. To help combat these issues, doctors provided ten tips for parents. These include educating themselves about anorexia, recognizing signs early, having open discussions with their children, being patient and supportive, seeking professional help, and encouraging healthy eating habits.
