UAE enforces strict penalties for illegal worker hiring
The UAE's Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) has issued a stern warning to employers. They must not hire workers without a valid work permit, even for trial purposes. This applies to both private sector jobs and domestic work. Hiring without a proper permit is against the UAE Labour Relations Law. The ministry conducts regular inspections with other authorities to find cases of illegal employment. Employers who are found to be hiring undocumented workers face serious penalties. These can include the suspension of their labour files and denial of new work permits. Offenders may also be referred to Public Prosecution for financial and legal consequences. According to the law, those who hire domestic workers without a license can face up to one year in prison and fines ranging from Dh200,000 to Dh1 million. This rule is part of the Federal Decree-Law on Domestic Workers, which aims to protect both workers and employers. MOHRE encourages employers to use only licensed recruitment agencies. These agencies are regulated by the ministry and can be verified online. The ministry has highlighted its zero-tolerance stance on violations of labor laws, noting that recent changes have strengthened protections for all involved. In addition, MOHRE offers flexible work permit options. This includes part-time work permits that allow businesses to hire people for fewer hours. There are also special permits for young workers aged 15 to 18, under specific conditions. The ministry remains committed to ensuring compliance with labor laws to safeguard both workers and employers.
