UAE exempts specific groups from driver's license requirement
The UAE government has introduced a new traffic law that will take effect on March 29, 2025. This law exempts three categories of drivers from needing a UAE driver’s licence. First, drivers with vehicles registered in a foreign country can drive in the UAE if they hold a valid driving licence from their home country. Second, individuals with a valid international driving licence can drive during their visit to the UAE. Finally, holders of foreign temporary driving permits for non-residency purposes are also exempt. To obtain a UAE driver’s licence, applicants must be at least 17 years old, pass a medical examination, and successfully complete a driving test. The law also allows the licensing authority to suspend or revoke licences if a driver is deemed unfit. Law enforcement can arrest drivers for serious offenses like reckless driving or driving under the influence. Vehicles can be impounded under various conditions, such as if the driver is unlicensed or the vehicle is unsafe. Penalties for driving without a valid licence include hefty fines and possible jail time for repeat offenders. The law emphasizes pedestrian safety and holds pedestrians accountable for crossing outside designated areas. Overall, this traffic law aims to improve road safety and enforce stricter penalties for violations in the UAE.
