UAE prioritizes artificial intelligence over Gaza conflict
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is prioritizing artificial intelligence (AI) over the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This was made clear during National Security Advisor Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed's visit to the White House on Tuesday. In his meeting with President Donald Trump, Tahnoon highlighted the UAE's focus on AI, technology, and investment in infrastructure and healthcare. Tahnoon, who has multiple roles, including being a tech investor and a chess grandmaster, also attended a dinner hosted by Trump. He met with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to discuss boosting Emirati investment in AI. In previous visits, Tahnoon showed interest in a book about AI's impact on the global economy and leads the AI group G42, which has received significant funding from Microsoft. During his visit, Tahnoon aimed to persuade the Trump administration to lift restrictions on exporting advanced AI technology to the UAE. He assured US officials that the UAE is a strong ally in AI development and not a security threat linked to China. The UAE has tried to maintain good relations with both the US and China, despite past concerns about a possible Chinese military presence in the region. Meanwhile, the conflict between Israel and Hamas has intensified after a ceasefire ended. Israel has resumed airstrikes and ground operations in Gaza, leading to many casualties and damage. The UAE has condemned Hamas's involvement in Gaza's governance. In discussions among Arab leaders, the UAE has pushed for the Palestinian Authority to be the sole governing body in Gaza, rather than Hamas.
