Uber offers no tips and fixed pricing for Waymo rides
Uber has announced exciting changes for riders using its new autonomous vehicles from Waymo. Customers will no longer need to tip when they use these driverless rides. Additionally, once a ride is ordered, the price will not change, offering more stability and predictability for users. Uber, a major transportation company operating globally, has been expanding its partnership with Waymo since May 2023. The company is bringing Waymo's autonomous vehicles to new cities, such as Austin and Atlanta, following initial launches in Phoenix, Arizona. The Waymo vehicles operate without drivers, which completes the experience by eliminating the need for tips. Currently, rides in these vehicles are priced the same as those with human drivers. However, Uber plans to make them more affordable in the future. Noah Zych, Uber's head of autonomous mobility, stated that the costs of autonomous rides are still being worked out. He emphasized the potential for reduced fares as the technology develops and becomes more efficient. Currently, Uber users in Austin can use the Uber app to request rides in Waymo’s all-electric cars. They can also opt for traditional rides if they prefer. The new technology allows riders to control aspects of their trip, including temperature and music, through a touchscreen in the vehicle. Uber is planning to expand Waymo’s service to Atlanta later this year, starting with rides for employees before full public access. Additionally, Waymo is testing autonomous vehicles in other cities like Las Vegas and San Diego to adapt to different driving conditions. As Uber enhances its services, customers have expressed concerns about price increases in their rides. The company is simultaneously working on partnerships, such as a new deal with Delta, which offers rewards for riders.
