Ubisoft adds Steam Deck support for Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Ubisoft's game, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, is now compatible with the Steam Deck, surprising many fans. Initially, the company had no plans to support this portable gaming device. However, recent changes allow players to enjoy the samurai-themed stealth game on the Steam Deck. The game runs efficiently despite its high system requirements and the use of ray tracing. However, players will notice a limited quality settings menu. Additionally, owning the game on Steam still requires players to sign into a Ubisoft Connect account. In a positive development, Shadows has received Steam Deck Verified status, meaning it works well on the device. Previous Assassin's Creed titles did not achieve this status due to complications with Ubisoft's launcher. However, Shadows features a simplified version of Ubisoft Connect that allows easier access. This means players can launch the game directly from their Steam library, streamlining the process. Once in the game, the graphics options are not as extensive as on a typical Windows PC. While this reduction may seem disappointing, the game still performs well on the Steam Deck. The settings can be adjusted minimally to ensure a stable gameplay experience. Players typically experience consistent frame rates around 30 frames per second, even in busy game areas. There are minor dips, but nothing that significantly disrupts gameplay. The controls also function well with the Steam Deck, offering an enjoyable experience. Battery life is a consideration for gamers. Playing Assassin’s Creed Shadows drained the Steam Deck battery in about 82 minutes, which is reasonable for a demanding game. Ubisoft’s efforts to ensure compatibility with the Steam Deck reflect a positive shift in supporting portable gaming platforms.
