UDF protests Idukki encroachments; stages walkout in Assembly
The United Democratic Front (UDF) walked out of the Kerala Assembly on March 18 in protest against the Speaker's decision not to allow a discussion on encroachments in Idukki district. The opposition accused the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government of failing to address illegal encroachments in areas like Chokramudi hills. Congress member Mathew Kuzhalnadan claimed that some encroachers have created fake title deeds to take over government land. He pointed out that officials had reported encroachments, but no action was taken. Kuzhalnadan mentioned that more than 20,000 people have been waiting for title deeds due to ongoing court issues. Revenue Minister K. Rajan responded by denying the allegations. He stated that the government is taking action against encroachers and has reclaimed some land. He emphasized that the government prioritizes resurveying Idukki district to resolve title deed problems. Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan accused top officials of being complicit in the encroachments. He mentioned that the government started acting only after the issue was raised by the opposition. Satheesan also said that significant construction had taken place on government land without proper authorization.
