UK kebab chain trials robots to reduce operational costs
The UK’s largest kebab chain is testing robotic machines to cut down on labor costs. This change comes after a recent budget increase in taxes for businesses, which has affected many in the industry. The chain, German Doner Kebab, is trying out “robotic kebab shavers” at three of its locations. These machines will replace human workers for slicing doner meat. Simon Wallis, the company’s boss, believes that the robots can enhance productivity and perform tasks more consistently than people. If the trial is successful, the company plans to introduce these robots in all 143 branches across the UK. Wallis noted that rising costs from minimum wages and taxes have made it essential for the business to find new ways to operate efficiently. However, the move has raised concerns among customers and competitors. Some, like kebab lover Jared Thomas, worry about job losses. Others, like the owner of Brockwell Kebab in South London, criticize the use of robots, suggesting it takes away from the authenticity of the kebab experience.
