UK needs to increase dietary fiber intake for health

A new report reveals that many people in the UK are not consuming enough dietary fibre, which is essential for good health. The study involved over 1,000 adults aged 18 to 75 and highlights a significant "fibre gap" that could affect long-term health. Despite 65% of participants acknowledging that the UK generally lacks fibre in its diet, many were lenient in their self-assessments. Less than half felt they personally had insufficient fibre intake, and around 38% believed they had enough. However, only 9% meet the recommended daily intake of 30 grams of fibre. While 74% of those surveyed claimed to understand what dietary fibre is, only 36% could accurately define it. This gap in knowledge is concerning since poor diets are linked to 11 million deaths worldwide, including many from low-fibre diets. Experts warn that not getting enough fibre can increase the risk of serious health issues like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and bowel cancer. The survey revealed that more than 40% of adults did not know that a high-fibre diet can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Additionally, three-quarters were unaware that increasing fibre could cut heart disease risk. A significant 70% did not know that fibre can help protect against bowel cancer, despite research showing its benefits. Experts emphasize that inadequate fibre intake is a major public health issue. Increasing daily fibre intake by just 10 grams could lower the risk of heart disease by 15% and bowel cancer by 13%. However, only a quarter of participants reported eating high-fibre foods regularly. The main barrier to increasing fibre consumption appears to be a lack of awareness; about a third do not consider fibre when shopping for groceries. Many participants do not prioritize high-fibre options, such as whole grains, which are vital for improving fibre intake. Health experts stress the urgent need to educate the public on the importance of dietary fibre and how to easily incorporate it into meals.
