UK petrol and diesel car sales hit record low as electric vehicle targets take effect
Petrol and diesel car sales in the UK have reached an all-time low, with new petrol registrations dropping to 29% in November. This decline follows the introduction of strict electric vehicle (EV) targets in 2024, requiring manufacturers to produce at least 22% zero-emission cars. Electric vehicle registrations have increased, making up 25% of all car registrations during the same period. The Zero Emissions Vehicle mandate is seen as effective, prompting manufacturers to transition towards electric models to avoid penalties. Analysts predict a significant decline in petrol car volumes over the next decade, potentially dropping from 18.7 million to 11.1 million. In contrast, electric vehicle numbers could rise from 1.25 million to 13.7 million by 2034.
