UK residents claim £10,000 annually in disability benefits
UK residents with conditions like eczema and bedwetting are claiming nearly £10,000 a year in disability benefits, according to recent data. The Work and Pensions Secretary, Liz Kendall, is set to announce plans to encourage more people to return to work while addressing the rising cost of benefits. As of January 2025, about 3.66 million people in England and Wales are eligible for Personal Independence Payments (PIP). This number has increased by 71% over the past five years. The total benefits bill has reached £48 billion for 2023-24 and is projected to rise to £67 billion by 2029-30. Around 1.3 million claimants can receive the maximum annual amount of £9,500. PIP supports individuals with disabilities, regardless of whether they are employed. It is available to those with a wide range of conditions, including long Covid and even common skin issues like acne. Recent reports suggest potential reforms could save the government around £5 billion. Officials have stated that the welfare system needs changes to be fairer for taxpayers while also assisting those who are long-term sick or disabled in finding work. The upcoming spring statement on March 26 will likely address these challenges amid the current economic difficulties. PIP is designed for adults with long-term health issues or disabilities, and applicants must show they have difficulties with daily living or mobility. Benefits can be claimed regardless of employment status, and PIP can be received alongside other benefits, except for specific military payments.
