UK to reveal grooming gang inquiry locations soon
Equalities minister Jess Phillips announced in the Commons that the locations of new inquiries into grooming gangs will be revealed very soon. She promised details would come before Easter. Phillips was responding to Shadow equalities minister Mims Davies, who asked for information on where local inquiries are taking place. Oldham has already been confirmed as one of the areas under investigation. Davies expressed concern about the lack of updates on the remaining inquiries, which are expected in other towns. Earlier this year, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced a nationwide audit to assess gang-based exploitation. This was in response to growing public attention on the matter. Davies questioned the safety of women and girls in towns affected by these gangs and sought clarity on when the remaining inquiries will start. Phillips urged for patience, stating that the Government is committed to more actions than before and that updates would be provided soon. The Government has rejected calls for a national review, instead focusing on local investigations. They plan to outline a timetable for implementing the recommendations from Professor Alexis Jay's 2022 report by Easter.
