U.K. tourist detained in U.S. returns home traumatized
U.K. tourist Becky Burke is back home in Monmouthshire, Wales, after spending 19 days in a U.S. immigration detention facility. Her parents, Paul and Andrea Burke, shared that Becky was released while wearing leg chains, waist chains, and handcuffs, which traumatized her. On Monday, Becky was moved from the detention facility to a location near the airport for her flight home. Her father mentioned that she could only walk with help from an ICE officer. No one in her family knew about her transfer back to Wales until she was almost on the plane. Paul Burke emphasized that his daughter is not a dangerous criminal. Now that Becky is home, her family is allowing her to enjoy simple comforts. She can sleep without bright lights, relax, and sit in the garden. Her parents are taking things slow and are not pressuring her to talk about her experience right away. While in detention, Becky occupied herself by drawing and writing, and she dreams of creating a graphic novel about her time in custody. Catherine Fookes, a politician from Monmouthshire, raised concerns about Becky’s treatment in the House of Commons. She was surprised and disappointed that Becky was transported to the airport in chains despite being innocent. Her father stated that issues like this need to be addressed to prevent similar situations from happening to others.
