Ukraine and Russia use shotguns to defend against drones
The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia has altered modern warfare, especially with the increasing use of drones. Drones are widely used for reconnaissance and can also attack troops and equipment. Many videos on social media show the destruction caused by these "kamikaze" drones. To counter these threats, soldiers are now using shotguns, which can be effective in shooting down drones. The drones commonly targeted by shotguns are usually inexpensive and somewhat fragile. Many commercial drones, like the DJI Mavic 3, can fly at speeds of 30 to 46 mph. This is comparable to the speed of various game birds. Despite this, targeting a drone with a traditional rifle can be challenging. Therefore, shotguns have become a popular choice as a last-resort weapon against these flying threats. Ukraine has purchased 4,000 BTS-12 shotguns for its troops to enhance drone defense capabilities. Other shotguns in use include the Safari HG-105M and the Benelli M4. Russia is also equipping its forces with shotguns, such as the AK-style VEPR-12. Specialized shotgun ammunition has been developed to improve effectiveness against drones, with pellets specifically designed to penetrate the materials used in drone construction. Innovative modifications are being made to existing weapons. For example, Russian soldiers have adapted their AK-74 rifles to fire mini shotgun shells. This allows multiple small projectiles to be fired at once, increasing the chances of hitting a drone. Both Ukraine and Russia are also working on drones that can shoot down other drones, showcasing a new evolution in drone combat. While shotguns can be effective, success relies on quick detection and targeting of the drones. Detecting drones early can give soldiers a fighting chance to prepare their defenses. Strategies are also being developed, such as placing dedicated shooters with shotguns at vehicles on the front lines. Overall, while shotguns are just one part of the broader defense against drones, they represent a practical option for soldiers facing these new challenges in warfare. A skilled soldier with a shotgun may have a good chance of taking down a drone if they notice it in time.
