Ukraine deploys battlebots to support frontline troops
Ukraine's military has announced the deployment of robotic battle units called "Lyut," meaning "fury," to the front lines. This decision comes as Ukraine experiences heavy losses, including losing 500 square miles in the Kursk region. The robots are meant to support Ukrainian troops and take on dangerous tasks, allowing human soldiers to remain safer. Recruitment challenges have pushed Ukraine to enhance its military capabilities. The country launched a new campaign to recruit young men aged 18 to 24. It is offering significant incentives, including bonuses of about $24,000, along with mortgage and education support. Many men aged 18 to 60 are currently barred from traveling abroad, making these incentives appealing. The Lyut robots are designed for various tasks under difficult conditions, especially for surveillance and providing fire support. They have been tested in real combat situations, specifically in Kursk. Despite their potential, the military acknowledges that they are not a solution to all challenges. The Lyut robot is compact and can be transported in a military pickup truck. It features a 7.62mm machine gun and durable construction. The robots have a battery life of up to 72 hours and can operate over a range of 20 kilometers. However, they require a soldier to control them remotely and are not fully autonomous. An operator can manage the robot and fire its weapon simultaneously. Despite the introduction of these machines, experts do not believe they will change the overall situation for Ukraine's military significantly.
