UMass Dartmouth limits hiring due to financial pressures
The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is limiting hiring and spending due to financial pressures in higher education. Approval will now be required for new hires, and overtime will be restricted. This decision follows similar actions by other Massachusetts institutions, including Harvard and MIT, which have implemented hiring freezes. UMass Chan Medical School has also announced a hiring freeze and spending cuts due to uncertainty over federal funding. UMass President Marty Meehan noted that job layoffs could be possible as the university responds to federal budget cuts. UMass Lowell is reviewing its resources in light of reduced funding for research.
