UN chief warns of escalating violence in Sudan as humanitarian crisis deepens
Summary: Sudan's military and paramilitary forces are increasing their attacks, worsening the humanitarian crisis, according to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He noted that outside powers are contributing to the conflict, which has led to severe hunger and disease for millions.
Guterres reported that over 750,000 people face catastrophic food insecurity in North Darfur. Recent violence in east-central Gezira province resulted in more than 120 deaths, with widespread reports of mass killings and sexual violence.
The conflict, which began in April 2023, has killed over 24,000 people and displaced more than 11 million. Guterres called for an immediate ceasefire and accountability for those violating international humanitarian law.
