UN cites Russia's actions as crimes against humanity
A United Nations Commission has reported that Russia's actions in Ukraine amount to crimes against humanity. The commission chair, Erik Møse, stated that Russia has used enforced disappearances and torture against a large number of Ukrainians during its invasion. Families in Ukraine are facing uncertainty about the fate of their missing loved ones. The commission's report highlighted that many civilians were detained in areas controlled by Russia or deported to Russia, where they suffered torture and sexual violence. The report pointed out that these actions were part of a systematic attack against civilians and followed a coordinated state policy. Russia's Mission in Geneva refused to comment on the report, calling it politicized and one-sided. Russia has denied allegations of torture or mistreatment of prisoners. According to the International Committee of the Red Cross, 50,000 people have been reported missing in the conflict over the past year. The report also detailed the brutal methods of torture used during interrogations, often conducted by the Federal Security Service. A previous report from 2024 included findings of systematic torture of male Ukrainian prisoners of war. British ambassador Simon Manley expressed shock at the findings of the report. Meanwhile, Eritrea claimed the report showed bias against Russia. Ukraine has requested that the U.N. Human Rights Council renew the commission's mandate, with a decision expected in April.
