UN estimates up to 1,400 killed in Bangladesh protests crackdown
The U.N. human rights office estimates that up to 1,400 people were killed in Bangladesh during a crackdown on student-led protests last summer. The protests were against the former prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, who has since fled to India. The report indicates that security forces systematically violated human rights, potentially committing crimes against humanity. Thousands more were injured, mostly from gunfire by security personnel. A U.N. fact-finding team was invited to investigate the events by interim leader Muhammad Yunus. The protests began over frustrations with a government job quota system and escalated into a significant uprising.
