The UN refugee chief, Filippo Grandi, visited Ottawa and supported Canada's decision to reduce refugee resettlement targets. This change aims to stabilize the housing market and prevent backlash against newcomers amid economic pressures.

Canada plans to cut its refugee resettlement by 14,400 in 2025, alongside a 31 percent reduction for protected persons. Overall immigration targets will drop from 500,000 to 395,000, a 21 percent decrease.

Grandi emphasized the importance of careful integration during housing crises. He noted that Canada remains a leader in refugee resettlement but warned that public support could wane without proper housing solutions.
