UN report highlights climate change as a major driver of global displacement
A new report from the UN Refugee Agency highlights that climate change is increasingly driving global displacement. Currently, 75% of the 120 million displaced people live in areas severely affected by climate impacts, worsening existing humanitarian crises. The report notes that climate-related hazards are intensifying conflicts and displacing populations, particularly in countries like South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Syria. By 2040, the number of countries facing extreme climate hazards is expected to rise significantly, affecting many displaced individuals. The report emphasizes the need for urgent action to address climate change and its effects on refugees. It calls for better funding and policies to support vulnerable populations and improve their resilience in the face of climate challenges.
