UN report shows climate pledges fall short of 2030 emissions reduction target
Summary: The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) reports that current national climate pledges will only reduce global emissions by 2.6 percent by 2030, a slight increase from 2 percent last year. This falls far short of the 43 percent reduction needed to meet the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
The upcoming COP29 climate talks in Baku will focus on creating a new global emissions trading system and a $100 billion annual financial package to support developing countries. Nations are expected to submit stronger climate pledges by February 2025.
Additionally, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) noted that greenhouse gas levels are rising at an unprecedented rate. Carbon dioxide concentrations have increased by 11.4 percent over the past 20 years, significantly driven by events like severe wildfires.
