UN Security Council meets on Syria after Assad's departure
The UN Security Council will meet on Monday for an emergency session about Syria following President Bashar al-Assad's departure from the country. Russia requested the meeting, according to its deputy ambassador. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attributed Assad's fall to Israeli actions against Iran and Hezbollah. Thousands of Syrians in Turkey celebrated the news on Sunday. On the ground, Turkish-backed Syrian fighters launched an offensive in northern Manbij after recently taking control of a Kurdish-held area. The U.S. military reported strikes against leaders and camps of a group in Syria.
