UN sees Colombia improved, urges continued peace efforts

The UN has acknowledged improvements in Colombia since the 2016 peace agreement, despite ongoing challenges. The UN urged Colombia to utilize the agreement to prevent renewed conflict. Carlos Ruiz Massieu, head of the UN Verification Mission, noted a more inclusive political system in Colombia, but highlighted that full implementation of the peace accord remains incomplete, particularly regarding rural reform. He also expressed concern over violence in former FARC-controlled areas. The UN official emphasized the need for a combined approach of peace and security policies to address the situation. He believes deeper implementation of the peace agreement could have prevented current issues and prevent future conflicts.
