UN warns extreme heat threatens nearly 500 million children

The UN reports that nearly 466 million children face double the number of extreme heat days annually compared to their grandparents, with significant risks to health and education. In 2024, at least 80 million children have been affected by school closures due to high temperatures. West and Central Africa are particularly impacted, with 123 million children experiencing extreme heat for a third of the year.
