Unauthorized practitioners are treating skin conditions in Kerala

Skin specialists in Kerala are raising concerns about unauthorized practitioners offering dermatology treatments. Many clinics are run by unqualified individuals, including dental surgeons and beauty parlour staff with little education. Patients are treated by people holding unrecognised degrees, which can lead to serious health issues. The Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists, and Leprologists (IADVL) has discovered numerous such clinics across Kozhikode, Kannur, and Malappuram. These facilities often display the name of a qualified dermatologist, but actual treatments are performed by untrained staff. According to experts, this has resulted in a rise in dermatological problems over the past two years. Incidents have been reported where patients experienced severe side effects from procedures done by unqualified persons. Some faced burns, scars, and other complications from improper laser treatments. There are also cases of disfigurement and nerve damage from poorly administered Botox. Unapproved hair procedures have caused infections, hair loss, and scarring. Another serious issue is the misuse of strong dermatological medications by these practitioners. The overuse of topical steroids can lead to severe skin complications. Only those with recognized qualifications can diagnose and treat skin conditions properly. IADVL officials note that social media plays a role in promoting these unqualified practitioners, attracting patients with flashy advertisements and misleading testimonials. The organization has filed complaints with government authorities and launched campaigns to raise awareness. They are also implementing QR codes at clinics to help patients verify credentials.
