UNICEF launches new child protection units in Pakistan

UNICEF is working to improve child protection in Pakistan. They are setting up District Child Protection Units (DCPUs) in areas that need help. Three new units will start by April 2025. These units aim to provide care for at-risk children. The DCPUs offer medical, psychological, and legal support to children who experience abuse or neglect. One unit in Rajanpur has already helped over 135 cases since it opened in 2024. This support has been crucial for many families. One case is that of Athena, a five-year-old girl who was kidnapped and assaulted last year. The trauma caused her to lose her ability to speak. While she received medical treatment, her family faced emotional and legal challenges. The DCPU in Rajanpur provided therapy and support, helping Athena recover. Her father, Ahmed, said, "She is alive again." UNICEF, with help from Sweden, is focusing on flood-prone areas to improve these services. They aim to help families heal from trauma. Caseworker Syed Muzammil Karim stresses the importance of timely support. "We may not be able to prevent every crime, but we can help families heal," he said. The DCPUs also work to educate families about preventing abuse. Psychologist Awais Nasir notes the need for culturally suitable methods to teach children about safety. However, there are challenges in the legal system. Ahmed suggests having a legal expert at the DCPU could speed up the process for families seeking justice. Muzammil adds that support is an ongoing process. With more DCPUs planned, UNICEF hopes to reach more children and improve child protection across Pakistan.
