Union urges Hudson’s Bay to prioritize workers in Kamloops
The United Steelworkers union (USW) is urging Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) to prioritize its employees as they prepare to close their Kamloops store. This closure will result in over 30 union jobs being lost, affecting many workers and their families. Jordan Lawrence, the Financial Secretary for USW Local 1-417, expressed disappointment about the store’s closure, noting that HBC has been an important part of the Kamloops community for over 45 years. He emphasized the impact on employees and stated that the financial struggles of the company are concerning. The USW is demanding that HBC be open about the liquidation process. They want all wages, benefits, and severance requirements to be honored. Lawrence emphasized that workers deserve clear information instead of vague assurances. The union warns about the risks employees face during such closures. They have seen how jobs were lost and pensions were affected in past store shutdowns, like Sears. The USW is committed to defending the financial security of workers at the Kamloops store. The union also called for HBC to engage in meaningful discussions with them and ensure a fair process for all workers affected by the closure. The USW represents a large number of workers across Canada and is committed to advocating for better working conditions and compensation.
