United Airlines becomes the largest European carrier
United Airlines is now the largest airline operating flights from the US to Europe. United will add seven new routes for the summer season starting March 30. The change comes as airlines switch to their summer schedules. According to data from Cirium Diio, United has surpassed Delta Air Lines in terms of capacity for flights to Europe. United plans to offer about 9.72 million round trip seats, while Delta will have 9.68 million. This gives United a slightly larger share of the market, a position it last held in 2023. United will operate around 40,956 round trip flights, about ten percent more than Delta's 37,232 flights. The difference is partly due to United's use of certain aircraft, which allows it to fit more seats per flight. This summer, United’s European network will expand to 82 routes from seven hubs, up from 75 last year. A significant number of flights will come from Newark, where nearly 40% of United’s European services are based. It will serve 33 different airports in 14 countries this summer. Among the new routes, United will start flights to Bilbao, Faro, Funchal, and Palermo. These are the first direct US flights for some of these locations. United is also introducing routes from Denver to Rome, and from Washington Dulles to Nice and Venice. Overall, United's expansion marks its significant presence in the transatlantic market this summer, offering more options for travelers between the US and Europe.
