Urbanization reduces sparrows' nesting spaces in Guwahati

timesofindia.indiatimes.com

Guwahati is facing a challenge as sparrows are struggling to find nesting spaces. Rapid urban development has led to a significant decrease in habitats for these birds. Experts warn that this situation affects not just sparrows, but also the overall biodiversity in the area. Many sparrows are now crowded into a few remaining spaces. In the past, traditional Assam-style houses provided lots of room for these birds to nest. However, the rise of modern concrete buildings has taken away these homes. Residents now often do not welcome sparrows. In some places, like JB's restaurant in Christian Basti and the Guwahati railway station, thousands of sparrows gather in trees. Their population seems stable, but their living conditions are getting worse. If more trees are cut down for new buildings, the situation could become dire. Another issue is the lack of water. Many natural wetlands have been turned into construction sites, reducing sparrows' access to water. Jayaditya Purkayastha, a conservationist, highlighted two main problems: the lack of nesting space and limited food and water. He emphasized the need for public awareness regarding the declining habitats of sparrows. Purkayastha noted that urban lifestyles have changed, affecting food availability for sparrows. Unlike in rural areas where leftover rice is common, urban environments often have less waste for birds to eat. He believes that reconnecting with traditional values can help. Small actions, like setting up bird nests at home, can contribute to sparrow conservation efforts. He shared a personal story, saying his father would offer rice to gods and then scatter some outside for sparrows. Purkayastha believes if people return to such practices, conservation will happen naturally. He urged that a shift in mindset is needed to protect urban biodiversity before it's too late.
