The Indian government has approved a new urea plant in Assam. This project, costing ₹10,601.4 crore, will produce 12.7 lakh metric tonnes of urea every year. The Union Cabinet made this decision on March 19, 2025. The plant will be located at the Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited's site in Namrup. It will operate under a joint venture with a debt-equity ratio of 70:30. Construction of the plant is expected to take about 48 months. The Cabinet also approved an 18% equity stake for National Fertilizers Limited, which is an exception to the usual rules. In this joint venture, the Government of Assam will own 40% of the shares. Other stakeholders include Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited with 11%, Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Limited with 13%, and Oil India Limited with 18%. This new project aims to boost urea production in India, particularly in the North-Eastern region.
