The United States added a significant amount of natural gas pipeline capacity in 2024, the highest since 2021. This increase could help U.S. natural gas producers and lower energy costs, especially for consumers in the Northeast. Last year, five new pipelines were completed to deliver gas from production areas to major demand centers. The total pipeline capacity increased by 17.8 billion cubic feet per day, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). Notable projects included the Mountain Valley Pipeline and several others that boosted capacity from key regions like Appalachia and Haynesville. Additional projects aimed at transporting gas to LNG export terminals also contributed to the increase. New gas pipeline projects are expected to continue, supported by the Trump Administration. Energy Secretary Chris Wright mentioned that the previously canceled Constitution Pipeline could start construction by the end of this year. This pipeline would transport gas through New York to New England. Williams Companies expressed interest in reviving the Constitution Pipeline if there is enough demand and support from regional governors. They aim to avoid delays and legal challenges during the construction process.
