US billionaire demolishes Kinsale home for reconstruction plans
A US billionaire has started major renovations on his newly acquired Kinsale home, Sprayfield House, which he bought for €4.75 million in 2023. The historic Georgian villa has been largely demolished as engineers found serious issues, including rising damp and rot. James Berwind, heir to a vast fortune, plans to transform the property into a home and farm. He also intends to establish a private animal sanctuary on the grounds, focusing on the needs of horses and goats. When Berwind purchased the 200-year-old house, it was full of charmed features, including organic gardens and beautiful sea views. However, unexpected problems with the building's structure have led to more extensive renovations than initially planned. Architect Louise Sliney is overseeing the project, which has received approval from Cork County Council. The plans include restoring the home to its original state and rebuilding both the interior and the roof. Berwind and his husband, Kevin Clark, are committed to the local community. They have supported various local causes, like the Kinsale Youth Centre and the Kinsale Art Festival. They also purchased additional land to grow hay for their sanctuary and other animal rescues in Ireland. Despite the challenges, Berwind remains optimistic about creating a lasting home in Kinsale, a place they have grown to love.
