U.S. develops 'Golden Dome' missile defense system
The United States is working on a new missile defense system called the "Golden Dome." This system aims to protect the entire country from threats like intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and hypersonic weapons. Inspired by Israel's Iron Dome, the Golden Dome will use space-based radars, missile interceptors, and laser technology. However, experts say it may take years to fully implement, with initial funding expected in the 2026 budget. The idea for a missile defense shield is not new. President Ronald Reagan proposed a similar system 40 years ago, known as the Strategic Defense Initiative, which was eventually abandoned. Under President Donald Trump, the Golden Dome is being reintroduced. Trump emphasized its importance for national security and seeks Congressional support for its funding. Unlike the Iron Dome, which targets short-range threats, the Golden Dome aims to counter a broader variety of missiles. The project faces challenges due to the large size of the US, making full coverage complex. General Michael Guetlein from the US Space Force highlighted the need for space-based systems to track modern missiles. Currently, existing defense systems offer limited protection and are mainly used overseas. Phil Jasper, CEO of Raytheon, mentioned that a multi-layered approach is necessary for effective defense against different types of threats. Coordination among various agencies and defense contractors is a significant hurdle. Jonathan Moneymaker from BlueHalo noted that this project is more about organizational challenges than technology. Funding is also a concern, with plans to present a financial roadmap soon. Initial operational capabilities may start in major cities by 2026. Experts warn that fully developing the system could take 7 to 10 years and cost billions. Laura Grego from the Union for Concerned Scientists expressed doubts about the feasibility of defending against sophisticated nuclear threats. As the government moves forward, the future of the Golden Dome remains uncertain. The key issue is whether it will deliver the promised security or become another costly defense project.
