US election spending reaches record $15.9 billion ahead of 2024 vote
The 2024 US election is projected to be the most expensive ever, with total spending reaching $15.9 billion, surpassing the previous record of $15.1 billion in 2020. This amount is more than double the $6.5 billion spent in 2016.
Vice President Kamala Harris leads in fundraising, raising over $1 billion, with significant support from small donors. Donald Trump’s campaign raised $382 million directly, with major contributions from wealthy supporters, including Timothy Mellon, who donated $197 million.
Campaign ads have accounted for $10.5 billion of the spending, with Harris and Trump campaigns spending $2.6 billion on ads from March to November 1. Pennsylvania saw the highest spending among swing states, totaling $1.2 billion across all races.
