US extends temporary protected status for 800,000 Venezuelans and Salvadorans
The U.S. has extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for about 600,000 Venezuelans and over 230,000 Salvadorans for another 18 months. This decision comes as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office, raising concerns about future immigration policies. The extension allows these individuals to remain legally in the U.S. until at least October 2026. TPS provides temporary protection but does not lead to permanent residency or citizenship. The Biden administration has expanded TPS to cover around 1 million people from various countries. The Department of Homeland Security cited ongoing humanitarian crises in Venezuela and environmental issues in El Salvador as reasons for the extension. Advocates continue to push for TPS protections for other countries facing similar challenges.
