US extends temporary protected status for 800,000 Venezuelans and Salvadorans
The U.S. has extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for about 600,000 Venezuelans and over 230,000 Salvadorans for another 18 months. This decision comes as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office, raising concerns about future immigration policies. The Department of Homeland Security cited ongoing humanitarian crises in Venezuela and environmental issues in El Salvador as reasons for the extension. TPS allows individuals to remain in the U.S. legally but does not provide a path to citizenship. The extension runs until October 2026 for Venezuelans and September 2026 for Salvadorans. Advocates continue to push for TPS protections for other countries facing similar challenges.
