US proposes ban on vehicle tech from China and Russia for security reasons
The Biden administration has proposed a ban on connected vehicle technologies from China and Russia to protect U.S. national security. The new rule would prohibit the import and sale of certain vehicle connectivity and automated driving systems linked to these countries. The ban targets technologies like Bluetooth, satellite, and Wi-Fi modules, as well as software and hardware for automated driving. The Commerce Department identified risks such as surveillance and disruption of critical infrastructure. This proposal builds on earlier actions, including increased tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and restrictions on foreign technologies. The rule aims to prevent potential threats from foreign adversaries accessing sensitive driver data and vehicle systems.
