US reports 13.5 tons of hydrogen sulfide released at Texas refinery in October incident
The U.S. Chemical Safety Board reported that 13.5 tons of hydrogen sulfide gas were released at Pemex's Deer Park refinery in Texas on October 10. This incident resulted in the deaths of two contract workers and injuries to thirteen others. The CSB is investigating the maintenance management and emergency response by Pemex. The gas release lasted about an hour, prompting local authorities to advise residents to stay indoors due to the toxic nature of hydrogen sulfide. Lawsuits have been filed against Pemex and former owner Shell by families of the deceased, injured workers, and local residents. Other agencies, including OSHA and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, are also looking into the incident.
