USC's food delivery robots need regulation, says lawmaker

Little robots are now delivering food on the University of South Carolina campus. A new bill, H. 3969, sponsored by Rep. Todd Rutherford, aims to regulate their operation, allowing them to navigate sidewalks and roads in Richland County. The bill permits robots up to 150 pounds and 36 inches by 30 inches to travel at speeds of 10 mph. They must yield to pedestrians and have insurance. Currently, the robots can cross some roads but are restricted on state highways. Students have mixed feelings about the robots, describing them as both cute and a nuisance. The delivery devices have completed over 8,300 orders since February 2024, with a delivery fee of $3.49.
