Used electric car sales surge in March 2025
Sales of used electric cars are expected to rise sharply this March 2025, with around 40,000 units likely to change hands. This increase in supply is leading to a drop in prices for pre-owned electric vehicles (EVs). Experts believe that many drivers will sell their current cars this month due to expiring leases. March is a key month for auto sales, coinciding with the release of new license plates—which often prompts people to upgrade their vehicles. Patrick Cresswell, co-founder of ClearWatt, forecasts that this trend will help lower used EV prices. The demand for used electric cars has surged, with sales climbing by 57.4% in 2024. Last year, 188,382 used EVs were sold, driven by a growing supply and lower costs. A recent study revealed that used EVs are now about 8.5% cheaper than traditional petrol or diesel cars, offering significant savings for buyers. Cresswell advises potential buyers to check the condition of any used EV carefully. He suggests using ClearWatt's EV Check Plus service to assess key details like range and charging costs. It’s important for buyers to verify the battery's health. A good practice is to ask the seller to charge the battery fully before a test drive and observe how the range decreases during the drive. Additionally, many electric car models include a battery health display, which shows the remaining usable capacity. This information can help buyers make informed decisions and ensure they choose a reliable vehicle.
