UST Tigresses learn from defeat in women's volleyball
The University of Santo Tomas (UST) women's volleyball team, known as the Growling Tigresses, faced a tough loss against the National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs. This match was a rematch of last year's championship. The Tigresses won the first two sets but eventually lost in the fifth set, with a score of 23-25, 25-17, 19-25, 25-18, 15-9. After winning five consecutive games following their opening loss to Far Eastern, the defeat against NU highlighted the areas where UST still needs to improve. Team captain Detdet Pepito expressed that they have much work ahead of them but remain determined to keep pushing throughout the season. UST is currently dealing with injuries to key players, Jonna Perdido and Xyza Gula. Their absence made it easier for NU to focus on other important players like Regina Jurado and Angge Poyos. Assistant coach Yani Fernandez noted that the team struggled with passing, which affected their overall performance. The Tigresses had a mixed first round, securing only one victory in straight sets. Despite these challenges, both Pepito and Fernandez believe the team has the potential to reach the finals again. They are now focused on bouncing back stronger in their upcoming matches.
