Utah aims to hire NBA's Wes Wilcox as GM

The University of Utah is looking to hire Wes Wilcox as the men's basketball general manager. He currently works as the assistant general manager for the Sacramento Kings. This appointment could be significant as Wilcox would be the highest-ranking NBA official to take a college front office position. Wilcox has nearly 20 years of experience in the NBA. He served as the general manager for the Atlanta Hawks from 2015 to 2017. He also held various roles, including assistant general manager and director of player personnel for the Cleveland Cavaliers. His potential move to college basketball comes at a time when collegiate sports are becoming more similar to professional leagues. Starting in the 2025-26 season, colleges may begin paying athletes directly from revenue sharing. This trend might lead to more professionals transitioning from the NBA to college sports. If Wilcox joins Utah, he would bring valuable skills in managing team budgets and building rosters. His hiring comes as Utah seeks to improve after a mediocre season of 16-16, leading to the firing of the previous coach, Craig Smith. The Utah basketball program has not made it to the NCAA tournament since 2016.
