Vancouver Island towns lost over $60M from highway closures
A wildfire in June 2023 caused major disruptions on Vancouver Island's Highway 4, leading to significant economic losses for local businesses in Tofino, Ucluelet, and Port Alberni. The highway was closed for weeks, and there were intermittent closures throughout the summer due to repairs. Local businesses, heavily reliant on summer tourism, struggled during this time. A recent report from local chambers of commerce estimates losses exceeding $60 million. Tofino, a major tourist destination, accounted for half of these losses, with Port Alberni and Ucluelet experiencing losses of $14.9 million and $14.5 million, respectively. Joleen Dick, CEO of the Alberni Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the economic and social impact of these closures. Business owners highlighted how their revenues dropped significantly due to the lack of visitors. The report not only outlined financial losses but also emphasized the need for better communication during emergencies and the importance of establishing a second route for transportation in and out of the region. John Alan Jack, Chief Councillor of the Huu-ay-aht, stressed that all levels of government should consider this option seriously to prevent future economic damage. While discussions are ongoing regarding a new emergency route, there are currently no plans for a permanent alternative. Local leaders hope to improve safety and connectivity for their communities in the future.
