Vancouver's spring weather expected to be unpredictable

Spring weather predictions for British Columbia (B.C.) have been released. Vancouver is expected to experience a mix of weather as it transitions from winter to spring. Lisa Erven, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, says the province may see warmer temperatures above normal in April, May, and June. However, the weather can be unpredictable during this time. Currently, B.C. is moving out of a La Niña winter towards an “ENSO-neutral” weather pattern. This means the spring will not lean heavily towards either warmer or cooler conditions. Erven noted that the past winter did not follow typical La Niña characteristics, being quite weak. The ENSO-neutral pattern suggests a mix of El Niño and La Niña influences. As a result, B.C. may have warmer temperatures, but there could also be increased rainfall in some areas. Erven warns that spring weather can be dynamic, with the possibility of having various weather types in one day. For example, people could see snow, thunderstorms, or even heat waves. This variability is most common in March and April. The final week of winter will bring rain and temperatures ranging from 11ºC to -1ºC. In Vancouver, average daily temperatures are expected to rise from 6.7ºC in March to 15.8ºC in June. Rainfall will also decrease, with about 104.1 mm in March and 51.1 mm in June. Everyone should keep an eye on weather alerts for outdoor plans this spring.
