Vicki Peterson emphasizes embracing simplicity in guitar playing
Vicki Peterson, guitarist and co-founder of The Bangles, reflects on her experiences in a recent interview. She discusses the challenges and lessons she learned about guitar playing, especially during live performances. Peterson is known for her work on popular ’80s songs like "Walk Like an Egyptian" and "Eternal Flame." She emphasizes that her focus has always been on serving the song rather than showcasing flashy guitar skills. This mindset has shaped her approach to music and songwriting. In her early years, Peterson found studio work challenging. It was a significant learning experience for her, realizing the impact of what is recorded. "What you’re putting down is going to live for all eternity," she says, highlighting the seriousness of studio recording. Live shows, however, presented a different set of challenges. Peterson recalls a time when she was overly concerned about her performance. Eventually, she learned to let go of her worries. “Just stop. Be present. Let your thinking and mind go,” she advises, reminding herself to focus on playing rather than overthinking. Currently, she is working on a new project with her husband, John Cowsill. Their debut album, "Long After The Fire," will be released on April 12. The album features songs written by his late brothers from the family band The Cowsills. A full interview with Peterson will be available soon.
