Victor Scott II named Cardinals' starting center fielder
The St. Louis Cardinals have finalized their Opening Day roster, with Victor Scott II named the starting center fielder. Manager Oli Marmol announced the decision on Sunday, highlighting Scott's strong performance during spring training. Michael Siani, last year's center fielder, will take on a role as a fourth outfielder. For the first three weeks of the season, the Cardinals will use a five-man starting rotation, transitioning to a six-man rotation on April 16. The starting five will include Sonny Gray, Erick Fedde, Miles Mikolas, Andre Pallante, and Matthew Liberatore. Steven Matz will start in long relief before joining the rotation later. Despite a strong showing in spring training, right-handed pitcher Michael McGreevy will begin the season with Triple-A Memphis. Infielder José Fermín, who was initially expected to join the team, was also optioned to Memphis. The Cardinals will not have a backup shortstop but will rely on Brendan Donovan to fill in when needed. Scott's performance during the Grapefruit League was impressive, as he batted .366 and showed improved defense. His competition, Siani, struggled with only four hits in 40 at-bats. The team intends to use a platoon system in center field, allowing players like Scott and Nootbaar to share time. Marmol praised Scott for his commitment, stating he earned the center field spot. Scott expressed his relief upon making the team, emphasizing his preparation and hard work over the offseason. The Cardinals are also finalizing their bullpen, which includes Ryan Helsley and Phil Maton, among others. Marmol acknowledged the challenges of managing playing time for multiple players but is focused on developing talent while being competitive this season. The team will face the Minnesota Twins in their season opener on March 28.
